It allows you to have certain things / internet service trigger an action. It is one of my favorite services, right now.
I use IFTTT sent me a text whenever, the temperature (in my area) drops below freezing. Below is a sample of what this "recipe" looks like.
I have another set to text me when the weather changes to snow and one to text me when the weather changes to rain. Below is a "recipe" I created to send me a text when the weather changes to "rain".
Petty cool stuff!
